Report: TFC interview CanMNT's Herdman for head coach position
Toronto FC interviewed Canada's men's national team manager John Herdman for their vacant head coaching position, sources confirmed to TSN's Matthew Scianitti.
Herdman has managed the men's national team since 2018. Under his guidance, Canada qualified for the 2022 World Cup as the top team out of CONCACAF and reached the 2023 Nations League final.
Prior to joining the men's side, Herdman coached Canada's women's national team from 2011 until 2018. The Canadian women reached the quarterfinals of the 2015 World Cup and won two bronze medals at the Olympics with Herdman at the helm.
The 48-year-old Englishman has only managed on the international stage.
TFC fired Bob Bradley in June after a dismal 3-10-4 start to the campaign. He spent less than two years as the team's head coach and managed the club to a 14-19-26 record over 56 games. Terry Dunfield is currently the interim head coach.
Forge FC head coach Bobby Smyrniotis has also been interviewed for the position, Scianitti reports. The 44-year-old from Scarborough, Ontario has guided the Hamilton-based Canadian Premier League side to three titles in four seasons.
TFC president Bill Manning has put no timeline on filing the position, according to Scianitti.
TFC are 14th in the MLS Eastern Conference with 19 points through 24 matches.
