Report: D.C. United want to sign Higuain, reunite him with brother
D.C. United are examining the possibility of luring Juventus forward Gonzalo Higuain to the nation's capital to reunite him with his older brother, Federico, according to the Washington Post's Steven Goff.
United's fascination with Gonzalo is reportedly in an infantile stage, with the four-time MLS Cup champs yet to formally launch discussions with Juventus.
Federico, 35, joined United in March in a player-coach role following eight standout seasons with the Columbus Crew.
The brothers were last teammates at River Plate from 2004-07, and a third brother, Nicola, is the agent for both. It's understood that Gonzalo is keen to play with his brother and be closer to Argentina while his mother battles cancer.
Gonzalo has one year left on his current Bianconeri terms, meaning United would need to table a transfer fee unless Juventus would let the 32-year-old walk for free in an effort to lower payroll.
Financial uncertainties stemming from the coronavirus pandemic could also provide a stumbling block for high-profile transfers, with the MLS players' union currently in discussions over pay cuts to help lessen the economic burden on organizations.
Gonzalo, who joined Juventus in 2016 from Napoli for a then-Italian record €90-million fee, has scored five goals in 23 Serie A appearances this season.
United have explored the possibility of signing a big-name, European-based talent since Wayne Rooney's return to England in August 2019. Arsenal star Mesut Ozil and Real Madrid's Luka Modric have been linked with the club, and more recent reports have identified former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge.
