The former Liverpool youngster signed a three-year deal on Teesside and, should reports be believed, may soon be followed by Alvaro Negredo from the same club.
"I am really pleased he has signed," said Karanka of the right-back. "He is a player we know a lot about and he is a good addition to the squad.
"He is a good lad, and he has played a lot of games for Valencia."
Barragan made 24 La Liga appearances for Los Che last season, and will offer competition to Equatorial Guinea international Emilio Nsue, while filling the void left by the end of Ritchie De Laet's loan term from Leicester City.
Boro begins its Premier League campaign Aug. 13 with a visit from Stoke City.
