Spanish FA confirms La Liga will institute VAR next season
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed Wednesday that video assistant referees (VAR) will be implemented next season in La Liga.
A day after La Liga chief Javier Tebas announced with certainty that the Spanish top flight would opt for VAR, the RFEF cemented the decision, adding that the chairman of the Referees' Technical Committee, Victoriano Sanchez Arminio, has already reached out to match officials concerning the introduction of the technology.
The RFEF's application of VAR will be in accordance with the International Football Association Board (IFAB), a governing body responsible for standardised rules in football.
Referee can use VAR to determine goal decisions, cases of mistaken identity, red cards, and penalties. The technology has already been employed in top-tier divisions in Germany, Italy, and Portugal, while the English Football Association is set for a trial during a selection of third-round League Cup matches and the tournament's latter stages.
Prior to Wednesday's decision, La Liga was the only league among Europe's top five that did not employ some form of goal-line technology.
