Royals receive World Series rings ahead of clash with Mets
Two days after opening their 2016 campaign the same way they wrapped up their magical 2015 season - by besting the New York Mets - the Kansas City Royals received their World Series rings in a pregame ceremony at Kauffman Stadium.
In front of an appreciative crowd Tuesday afternoon, all the people responsible for snapping Kansas City's 30-year championship drought - every player who spent at least one day on the 25-man roster, for instance, as well as team owner David Glass, manager Ned Yost, and a host of coaches - got their rings to thunderous ovations. Several players no longer with the club, including Greg Holland, Jason Frasor, and Alex Rios, attended the ceremony, as well.
"Mission accomplished," Glass told the crowd. "I told (general manager) Dayton (Moore) and Ned and the players that I had so much fun, we should do it all again this year."
Here are some of the best photos from Tuesday's ceremony:
Kelvin Herrera (left) crafted a 0.66 ERA in 11 postseason appearances last year, notching 22 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings.
Edinson Volquez (left), who got the win Sunday in the season opener, tossed six quality innings in Game 5 of the World Series five days after his father, Daniel, died at age 63.
Eric Hosmer (left) authored one of the signature moments of the 2015 World Series when he plated the game-tying run in the ninth inning of Game 5 with an aggressive baserunning play.
The 2015 World Series championship rings feature five round white diamonds representing the five runs scored in the 12th inning of Game 5, and two blue princess-cut cut sapphires representing the team's back-to-back World Series appearances.
