Cubs bullpen plays chicken with foul balls at Wrigley
The Chicago Cubs continue to stay weird under the leadership of Joe Maddon.
With a hard-hit foul ball hurdling toward them during Wednesday night's game at Wrigley Field, reliever Travis Wood and the rest of the Cubs bullpen never flinched.
Chicago's relievers started the game of chicken with foul balls last season, and have kept it going this season despite the potentially dangerous results.
"(The tradition) continues," Wood told Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune. "I kind of wish I hadn't started that game last year. But since I did, you got to roll with it, and I was the unfortunate soul that got it.
"But it was a nice one. Nobody moved, which was great."
According to Gonzales, Cubs relievers must stay as still as possible no matter how close the ball comes to them, as demonstrated by Wood on Wednesday.
Wood did such a good job at not reacting to the play that it initially appeared to be some sort of optical illusion.
