Rizzo unable to catch ball in near-Bartman incident

MLB.com

Almost 13 years to the day after one of the most infamous plays in baseball history, Wrigley Field fans nearly Bartman'd again.

With one out in the eighth and the Cubs holding a 3-1 lead over the Dodgers in Game 1 of the NLCS, Anthony Rizzo chased Yasiel Puig's pop-up down the first-base side in foul ground, and attempted a highlight-reel catch on top of the tarp. Despite his effort, Rizzo dropped the ball, and one batter later Adrian Gonzalez delivered a game-tying, two-run single up the middle off Aroldis Chapman.

Rizzo's miscue was a close call for nearby fans, who were dangerously close to becoming the next Steve Bartman - had they touched the ball. Of course, it was Bartman in Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS who reached and deflected a crucial foul ball away from Moises Alou, with the Cubs just five outs from the World Series.
