The Detroit Tigers' decision to keep rookie JaCoby Jones on the big-league roster appears to have been the right move.
Jones, who entered spring camp as a long shot to make the Tigers but impressed the coaching staff, took Chicago White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana deep for his first big-league home run Tuesday in the second inning.
The 24-year-old could barely wipe the grin off his face upon returning to the dugout, where he was congratulated by his ecstatic Tigers teammates.
With the blast, Jones became the first Tigers rookie to homer on Opening Day since Kirk Gibson in 1980, and the first Tiger to hit his first career home run in their season opener since John Sullivan in 1965, according to Tigers PR.
