Donaldson wears golden sombrero for Canada Day

Toronto Blue Jays star third baseman Josh Donaldson picked an interesting way to celebrate Canada Day, going 0-for-4 with four strikeouts - a feat known as the golden sombrero.

It's a rare feat for the 2015 AL MVP. So rare in fact, the last time Donaldson struck out four times was May 24, 2015 in five at-bats - the 196th anniversary of the birth of Queen Victoria. It's worth noting, though, that the Canadian holiday commemorating her birth took place on May 18 that year.

The last time Donaldson struck out four times in his only four plate appearances dates all the way back to June 7, 2014, when he was a member of the Oakland Athletics.

Three of the strikeouts came against a dominant Chris Sale, who cruised to victory through seven innings of work. The left-hander continued his Cy Young-caliber start to the season, shutting out the Blue Jays and allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out 11.

The last of Donaldson's strikeouts came against Boston Red Sox reliever Blaine Boyer on three straight pitches in the eighth inning.

Of the 17 pitches Donaldson faced on Saturday, just three were called balls by home plate umpire Gerry Davis. Even further, Donaldson exclusively saw strikes for the last 10 pitches he faced, spanning the entirety of his last two plate appearances.

By donning the golden sombrero, Donaldson's 2017 season strikeout percentage swelled nearly two full percentage points from 22.2 percent to 24.1 percent. The 31-year-old is now slashing .254/.361/.486 on the season.
