Watch: Red Sox reliever Joe Kelly throws fastest pitch of MLB season
Tommy Gilligan / USA TODAY Sports
No pitcher in baseball had thrown a pitch harder than 102.2 mph in 2017 until Tuesday night.
With New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge at the plate, Boston Red Sox reliever Joe Kelly threw a 103.5-mph fastball - beating the previous high he'd thrown on April 28. The broadcast, however, showed it as 104.
Judge fouled it off.
The Boston Globe's Alex Speier pointed out that Kelly is one of nine pitchers not named Aroldis Chapman to throw a pitch 103 mph or faster since 2008. Chapman has thrown 250 of them. The rest have tossed 33.
Kelly struck Judge out on the next pitch: a 92.6-mph slider.
