Bumgarner rocked by Single-A club for 4 HRs in rehab start

Madison Bumgarner faced a bunch of kids in the California League on Wednesday, and those youngsters are going to be talking about this night for the rest of their lives.

In his second rehab start, and his first with the High-A San Jose Giants, San Francisco Giants ace Bumgarner - who's coming back from a shoulder sprain suffered in an April dirt-bike accident - was shelled by the visiting Rancho Cucamonga Quakes for nine runs in just four innings pitched.

The Quakes did most of the damage in the remarkable fourth frame as the three-time World Series champion unraveled at San Jose Municipal Stadium.

Bumgarner allowed eight of his nine earned runs in the inning, during which he faced 11 batters and allowed three homers. Rancho Cucamonga outfielder DJ Peters - ranked as the Los Angeles Dodgers' No. 18 prospect by MLB Pipeline - hit two of those fourth-inning blasts, upping his Cal League-leading homer total to 18 on the season.

The nine earned runs and four homers Bumgarner allowed Wednesday represent the 27-year-old's career worsts as a professional, according to ESPN Stats & Info - including all 221 of his big-league appearances since 2009.

His next rehab start is scheduled to take place July 10, again in San Jose. The big-league Giants aim to activate him from the disabled list following that start.

Wednesday's outing was the second straight disappointing rehab start for Bumgarner after he allowed four runs in 3 2/3 innings with Triple-A Sacramento on June 30.
