Home plate umpire leaves game after being hit in mask by foul tip
After taking a foul tip off the mask and staying in the game following a brief delay, umpire Kerwin Danley was replaced at home plate by Adam Hamari in Sunday's contest between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Kansas City Royals.
With Cody Bellinger at the plate swinging at an offering from Danny Duffy, the pitch was tipped foul and struck Danley in the mask, causing the home plate umpire to stumble backward.
While Royals catcher Drew Butera tried to keep the 56-year-old ump standing, Danley eventually wound up sitting down and needing water. He stayed in the game to wrap up the bottom of the first and top of the second inning, but was removed prior to the next half frame.
Hamari moved from first base to home plate while Todd Tichenor shifted from second base to first as the umpiring team switched to a three-man crew.
