Moncada, Willy Garcia exit game following scary collision
Top Chicago White Sox prospect Yoan Moncada and his teammate Willy Garcia were both injured in a scary collision while they chased Darwin Barney's pop fly during the sixth inning of Monday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Moncada, playing second base, tried to leap over a sliding Garcia in short right field and his knee hit Garcia in the head, sending both players to the ground.
The two remained on the ground for several minutes in obvious pain after the incident, while being tended to by both the White Sox and Blue Jays trainers. Moncada was carted off with what appeared to be a knee injury, as he could not put weight on his right leg. Garcia left the game as well; though he appeared dazed, the 24-year-old was able to walk to the dugout under his own power.
The White Sox announced that X-rays on Moncada's right knee were negative; he's being listed as day to day with a right knee contusion.
Garcia suffered a head contusion and will be re-evaluated Tues. He'll also be placed in concussion protocol, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
Moncada was replaced at second base by Yolmer Sanchez, while Alen Hanson took Garcia's spot in right field.
Barney's pop fly was ruled a no-catch by umpires, and the play resulted in a bases-clearing double that gave the Blue Jays a 6-0 lead.
