Dombrowski: Red Sox looking to 'add some run production' in offseason
Adjusting to life after David Ortiz has not been as easy a transition as the Boston Red Sox may have hoped.
Despite finishing 10th in runs scored in 2017, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski is looking to address the team's offense this offseason, according to the Providence Journal's Tim Britton.
"We would like to add some run production to our club," he said. "How that ends up happening, we'll see."
This could indicate another trade for Dombrowski and the Red Sox front office who landed ace lefty Chris Sale last offseason, or perhaps a pursuit of one of the top offensive free agents. For now, Dombrowski isn't showing his cards as free agency doesn't officially begin until Monday.
Even though the Red Sox managed to win the American League East for the second straight year, the team suffered something of a power outage. No player on the team cracked 25 home runs despite the fact that 60 different hitters reached that plateau in the major leagues in 2017.
This may come as a surprise since both Mookie Betts and Hanley Ramirez cranked 30 long balls in 2016.
Following Ortiz's retirement, the Red Sox were relatively quiet in free agency, adding first baseman Mitch Moreland in a one-year deal.
Boston features a fairly young offensive core, and will have a full season with third baseman Rafael Devers in the fold in 2018. The 21-year-old Devers hit .284/.338/.482 with 10 home runs in 58 games after his call-up.
