Holliday pitches St. Louis in Stanton sweepstakes: 'There's no better place'

The St. Louis Cardinals may want to ask an old friend for help in their pursuit of convincing Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton to accept a trade to the Midwest.

Former Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday had nothing but praise for St. Louis as a baseball town and as a fit for Stanton when speaking with MLB Network Radio on Wednesday.

"You've got all offseason to live in Miami or L.A. or wherever he wants to live. But for six months, man, getting after it in St. Louis as a baseball player, there's no better place," Holliday said. "You get a chance to play for a winning franchise in a city that loves baseball that would revere him for the next 10 years as their superstar."

Stanton reportedly prefers Los Angeles as his ideal landing spot should he waive his full no-trade clause. The Cardinals have remained in the mix despite reports suggesting the slugger isn't intrigued by St. Louis.

Holliday added he would personally call Stanton if given the opportunity to help sell him on playing for the Cardinals. There is no shortage of competition, either, as the San Francisco Giants have become one of the front-runners in the Stanton saga, reportedly willing to eat the entirety of his massive contract.

The 37-year-old Holliday spent seven-plus seasons with the Cardinals after being acquired from the Oakland Athletics in 2009. He played in four All-Star Games while with the Redbirds, winning the World Series in 2011. Currently a free agent, Holliday spent 2017 with the New York Yankees, primarily as the team's designated hitter.
