Cora unsure if Martinez can play outfield in Game 3 with injured ankle

As the World Series moves to the West Coast and to a National League ballpark, the Boston Red Sox may not have total access to star slugger J.D. Martinez.

"We'll see," manager Alex Cora said when asked if Martinez's ankle was healthy enough to play in the outfield, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com.

Martinez, who has served as Boston's designated hitter throughout the playoffs and most of the regular season, rolled his ankle in Game 1 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. While he stayed in the lineup for Game 2, he didn't have to appear in the outfield.

With the loss of the DH at Dodger Stadium, Martinez will have to either play in the outfield or come off the bench. The latter option is less than ideal since he's gone 3-for-7 in the first two games of the series and has driven in 13 runs in 11 postseason games in 2018.

Initially, it seemed that right fielder Mookie Betts could move to second base to accommodate Martinez in the outfield, but Cora said Thursday that Betts would not be starting at the keystone, according to Arash Madani of Sportsnet.

Game 3 is Friday at 8:09 p.m. ET at Dodger Stadium.
