Report: Padres make 'serious' offers to Machado, Harper
The San Diego Padres have reportedly made "serious" offers to superstar free agents Manny Machado and Bryce Harper, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.
San Diego's offer to Machado is thought to be in the area of eight years and $250 million, Heyman reports, and it may also include deferred money. Some believe that the San Diego offer is the largest Machado has received, according to A.J. Cassavell of MLB.com.
The Padres' proposal to Harper is believed to be worth more than their bid for Machado. Heyman also reported earlier Sunday that Harper has multiple offers on the table worth at least $30 million a season.
San Diego, which lost 96 games last year, was a late entrant into both the Machado and Harper sweepstakes. The team has been described as "aggressive" in its pursuit of Machado in particular, and general manager A.J. Preller reportedly had a recent meeting with the All-Star infielder and his wife in Miami.
As for Harper, his situation appears to be moving closer to a resolution. The Philadelphia Phillies have reportedly emerged as the favorite to land the former NL MVP, although he's said to still be talking with other teams.
