Yankees' pitching coach takes responsibility for recent struggles
New York Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild is taking ownership of the team's recent struggles on the mound.
"It's my responsibility to get it right," Rothschild said following another loss to the Boston Red Sox, according to Coley Harvey of ESPN.
"It's been really tough. It's tough on (the pitchers), it's tough on the team," he continued.
On Saturday, the Yankees allowed seven or more runs for a seventh straight game.
Opponent | Runs Allowed | Outcome |
---|---|---|
Rockies | 8 | Loss |
Twins | 8 | Loss |
Twins | 12 | Win |
Twins | 7 | Win |
Red Sox | 19 | Loss |
Red Sox | 10 | Loss |
Red Sox | 9 | Loss |
New York has also given up eight or more runs in six straight games against its bitter rivals from Boston.
The Yankees' starting rotation has been especially bad, as it's posted a 7.09 ERA since June 29, the second-worst mark in the majors during that stretch.
"It's not one thing. It doesn't just happen with one thing, it's different things for different guys," Rothschild said. "But first-pitch strikes and things like that haven't been good. It's just a bunch of different stuff that has been reviewed and talked about and tried to be corrected.
"With each individual, you go with what you've seen and what needs to get corrected. We talk about it, and if it's something mechanical or pitch-wise or grip-wise or whatever, we do it in the bullpen and try to correct it there."
