Giants to retire Will Clark's No. 22
The San Francisco Giants announced Sunday during a pregame ceremony that they plan to retire former National League MVP runner-up Will Clark's No. 22.
Clark, now a special assistant with the team, will be honored next year.
"To be forever linked with the greatest who have ever played this sport here in San Francisco, it's absolutely amazing,'' Clark told the crowd at Oracle Park, according to ESPN.
Clark will join rare company when his number is retired by the franchise. Barry Bonds is the only other former Giant to have that honor bestowed upon him without being in the Hall of Fame.
"To know I'm going to be out on that wall with Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Barry Bonds ... is absolutely unbelievable," Clark added. "It's something I'll never forget. This is my Hall of Fame. Thank you, thank you, thank you."
Clark played 15 years in the majors and ended his career with a .303/.384/.497 slash line. The six-time All-Star finished second in NL MVP voting in 1989 after posting a .953 OPS on a San Francisco team that reached the World Series before being swept by the Oakland Athletics.
