D-Backs, Bumgarner agree to reported 5-year, $85M deal
The Arizona Diamondbacks have officially signed left-hander Madison Bumgarner, the team announced Tuesday.
The contract is reportedly a five-year, $85-million deal, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, with $15 million deferred, sources told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
The contract includes limited no-trade protection, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. There are five teams on the no-trade list but they are not known, Piecoro adds.
The D-Backs were reportedly Bumgarner's No. 1 choice because he owns horses in the Phoenix area and loves it there.
The four-time All-Star posted a 3.90 ERA over 207 2/3 innings for the San Francisco Giants in 2019. The 30-year-old Bumgarner brings a sterling resume to Arizona with three championships and a 2014 World Series MVP trophy to his name after spending 11 years with the Giants.
San Francisco offered the starting pitcher a four-year contract in the $70-million range, a source told Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic.
In November, the Giants extended a qualifying offer to Bumgarner, which he declined, so the D-Backs will forfeit their second-round pick to sign him, according to Piecoro.
Bumgarner, who posted 3.2 WAR last season, reportedly joins a D-Backs club that finished 13th in WAR for starters, according to FanGraphs.
Arizona's starting rotation for 2020 projects to have Bumgarner lead a group that features the likes of Robbie Ray, Merrill Kelly, Luke Weaver, Mike Leake, Alex Young, and Zac Gallen. However, there have been trade rumors about Ray this offseason after he was a popular name during the trade deadline.
Several teams were reportedly interested in Bumgarner's services during free agency, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels, and San Diego Padres.
