Orioles' Castro robbed at gunpoint: 'I'm alive by the mercy of God'
Baltimore Orioles reliever Miguel Castro revealed on Instagram he was robbed at gunpoint Tuesday at a facility where he trains in the Dominican Republic, according to Roch Kubatko of MASN.
"I'm alive by the mercy of God," Castro wrote in Spanish, according to Kubatko. "They take away my chain and they also wanted to kill me and this has to stop now."
The story was first reported on by Spanish outlet Operacion Deportiva.
"Thank God that their gun got jammed," the 25-year-old righty added, according to Joe Trezza of MLB.com.
Castro's agency, Ballengee Group, released a statement following the incident.
"Miguel is safe," the release read, according to Trezza. "He is shaken. He feels extremely blessed and fortunate to still be alive and thanks everyone for their support. He will continue to support his country and use his platform to be a role model."
Orioles general manager Mike Elias also issued a statement regarding the incident.
"We are in contact with Miguel Castro regarding today's incident in La Romana, (Dominican Republic) and we are very thankful that he is safe," read the statement.
Castro has played for Baltimore since 2017. He posted a 4.66 ERA in 65 appearances in 2019.
