Mancini thanks fans for support after leaving camp with 'non-baseball' ailment
Trey Mancini took to Twitter on Sunday to thank fans for their well-wishes after he left Baltimore Orioles training camp the previous day to address a private medical issue.
"I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone for their kind sentiments and well-wishes," Mancini wrote. "It further drives home the fact that I am surrounded by the best family, friends/teammates, and fans that I could ever ask for."
Mancini departed spring training Saturday to undergo a "non-baseball medical procedure" that will force him to miss some time, manager Brandon Hyde said, according to Jon Meoli of The Baltimore Sun.
The 27-year-old slugger pledged to keep everyone informed of his status moving forward.
"Once there is more clarity, I will be sure to keep everyone updated over the next few days," he wrote. "I look forward to a healthy recovery and being back on the field soon!"
A number of Mancini's teammates expressed concern as he left camp.
"To see him go through what he's going through, it's heartbreaking," Baltimore pitcher Alex Cobb said, according to Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com. "But it gives us all an opportunity to show how much we love him and rally around him and be there for him during this because there's no doubt in my mind, the competitor that he is, that he's going to get through this with no problem."
Orioles veteran Chris Davis added: "I think it's super early. The season is fast approaching. He felt like he needed to take care of it beforehand, and we support him in anything he does."
Aaron Brooks, a former teammate of Mancini who signed a deal with the Kia Tigers of the Korean Baseball Organization this past winter, responded to the hitter's message on Twitter:
Mancini was set to enter his fourth full season with the Orioles after finishing third in AL Rookie of the Year voting in 2017.
