Rangers' Calhoun to be re-evaluated in 2 weeks following jaw surgery
The Texas Rangers announced that outfielder Willie Calhoun had a plate surgically inserted into his fractured jaw on Monday and he will be re-evaluated in two weeks, according to Levi Weaver of The Athletic.
Calhoun suffered the injury Sunday when Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Julio Urias hit him in the face with a fastball. He stayed down for a few minutes before being carted off the field.
The 25-year-old could be discharged from the hospital as early as Tuesday, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, who adds he will likely start the season on the injured list.
"Hey guys, just want to thank everyone for your prayers, I just got out of surgery and I'm doing well," Calhoun wrote on Twitter. "Can't wait to be back hitting homers soon."
Calhoun didn't need his jaw wired shut, and doctors believe the fracture is stable enough to not require an additional step, according to Grant.
He will also undergo concussion testing when he's more alert, Grant reports.
Calhoun slashed .269/.323/.524 with 21 home runs in 83 games for the Rangers during the 2019 season.
