Four California-based Major League Baseball teams have given employees an official notice about potential layoffs with the 2020 season suspended indefinitely, according to Dennis Lin and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
The Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, and San Francisco Giants now have the power to immediately cut jobs, although they have no current plans to do so, sources told Lin and Rosenthal.
The Angels, Dodgers, and Padres reportedly informed their full-time and part-time employees, while the Giants just told game-day workers.
MLB teams committed to paying staff until April 30 following a $1-million pledge by each club in mid-March. However, plans beyond that date are uncertain.
Legislation in California states that businesses with at least 75 employees are required to provide a 60-day notice before laying off 50 or more workers in a 30-day period, but an executive order passed in March due to the coronavirus pandemic suspended the need to give 60 days.
