Estrada says his MLB future is 'up in the air'
Free-agent right-hander Marco Estrada doesn't know if he will pitch again in the majors after making only five starts last season due to back issues.
"I'm not sure right now," the 36-year-old Estrada told Sportsnet 590's "Lead Off with Ziggy and Scotty Mac" on Wednesday. "I actually had a few teams call during the offseason, and I had to tell everybody that I didn't want to go through what I did last year - only pitch a few games and then basically be out for the rest of the year.
"If I come back, I want to be as close to 100% as possible. I don't think I'll be there, but I know that I can pitch at like 80, 85% and then just hopefully maintain that. But if I'm not near that area then I don't know; it's time for me to go, I guess. It's time for me to move on. ... It's up in the air. ... Kinda just going with the flow and seeing where I am in July, but obviously, with this whole quarantine thing going on, there might not even be a season."
The 12-year veteran pitched just 23 2/3 innings with a 6.85 ERA in 2019 for the Oakland Athletics. His best seasons came with the Toronto Blue Jays when he was a member of the teams that made back-to-back American League Championship Series appearances in 2015 and 2016.
Estrada has also pitched for the Washington Nationals and Milwaukee Brewers. The one-time All-Star owns a career 4.29 ERA and nearly threw a no-hitter and perfect game in back-to-back starts in 2015.
