MLB still building 'Field of Dreams' park for August game
While a start date for the 2020 season remains unknown, Major League Baseball is continuing to construct a temporary ballpark at the Field of Dreams site in Dyersville, Iowa, for a scheduled regular-season game between the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees, the league confirmed to Forbes' Barry M. Bloom.
As of now, the White Sox-Yankees contest remains on the schedule for Aug. 13, according to Bloom. But while the temporary 8,000-seat stadium is being built, there's no guarantee the game will be played at the site this year.
"We're still working on (the ballpark)," a source told Bloom. "But the game's in limbo. Everything is in limbo."
MLB announced the game last August as an homage to the 1989 movie "Field of Dreams," starring Kevin Costner. While the temporary stadium is being built to adhere to MLB specifications, the entire Iowa site - including the cornfield and baseball diamond - has become a tourist attraction for baseball fans.
Construction of the temporary park began last August. Since the beginning of the pandemic, it's continued while complying with social distancing rules as outlined by the state of Iowa and the Center for Disease Control, according to Bloom. All workers are having their temperatures checked before entering the site.
While construction on the new facility has continued, the Field of Dreams site itself has not opened to the public due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The pandemic has put the entire 2020 MLB season in jeopardy. There have been numerous proposals to try to start the season safely, including a recent plan reportedly involving ballparks spread across Texas, Florida, and Arizona.
