Jeremy Giambi on 'The Flip': 'Should I have run Posada over?'
Former Oakland Athletics outfielder Jeremy Giambi can't help but wonder what the outcome would've been in the 2001 ALDS if he wasn't called out at home plate after New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter made "The Flip" in Game 3.
Jeter completed arguably the most iconic play of his Hall of Fame career in the bottom of the seventh inning to preserve a 1-0 Yankees lead after Giambi tried to score from first following a double by Terrence Long.
"Now that we know what happened, it's, 'Maybe I should've slid,'" Giambi said, according to Alex Coffey of The Athletic. "If I slid and I was out, maybe the question would be, 'Should I have run (Jorge) Posada over?' And then I think, 'Well, maybe I should've taken him out.' And then I think back to when Pete Rose took out Ray Fosse (in the 1970 All-Star Game), and I think, 'Well, what happens if I ruin Posada's career?'"
The Athletics ended up suffering a 1-0 defeat and ultimately lost the series in five games after taking the first two contests.
"Those are things we can't analyze," Giambi said. "Obviously, I think about it. I don't dwell on it, but I think about it. I think that's part of our competitive nature. I mean, we were going to win a World Series.
"I know that was the first round, but we always felt like we had to go through the Yankees, and if you got through the Yankees, you had a pretty good chance, at that time. They were the team to beat."
