Trout unsure about playing in 2020: Family's health is 'top priority'

Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout said Friday that he's still discussing with his wife whether to play baseball in 2020 and that he's still unsure about his decision, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic.

"Keeping them healthiest is my top priority," said Trout, whose wife, Jessica, is pregnant with their first child.

The reigning 2019 AL MVP said he will keep talking with Angels general manager Billy Eppler and skipper Joe Maddon on what to do when the baby comes.

"Honestly, I still don't feel that comfortable," Trout said, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times. "It's gonna be tough. I've got to be really cautious these next couple weeks. I don't want to test positive. I don't want to bring it back to my wife. It's a tough situation we're in."

He added: "If I test positive, doctors are saying I can't see the baby for 14 days. Biggest thing is keeping Jess safe, keeping the baby safe. I have to be really cautious."

The eight-time All-Star said he will play it by ear but acknowledged that he'd ultimately like to suit up for the Angels if it's safe.

"My mindset is to play. I want to play. It's just a tough situation," he said, according to Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com.

Trout was spotted working out with his teammates Friday while wearing a mask.

Maddon understands the concerns and trepidations of playing during the pandemic.

"How could you not?’" Maddon said, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. "Being a father for the first time is very significant. To do it under these circumstances, there's a lot of layers involved.

"A lot of concern, for his baby and his wife, but with the perspective that he needs to stay well because he needs to be around people. There’s a lot to think about. You can't take any of this lightly. You don’t know what sacrifice means until you have your own kid."
