Mets place Lowrie on IL with knee discomfort
The New York Mets placed infielder Jed Lowrie on the 10-day injured list with left knee discomfort, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.
Lowrie, 36, will miss Opening Day for the second consecutive year due to an injured knee. Due to the lingering issue, Lowrie was limited to eight plate appearances in 2019. He went 0-for-7 with a walk.
The Mets signed the former All-Star to a two-year, $20-million contract prior to the 2019 season after a strong campaign with the Oakland Athletics. He hit .267.353.448 with a career-high 23 home runs and 99 RBIs in 157 games with Oakland in 2018.
There is no timeline available for his return, though manager Luis Rojas said Monday that Lowrie will see a Mets doctor to "establish a plan to progress him back," according to Tim Healey of Newsday.
In Lowrie's absence, the Mets are projected to open the season with Pete Alonso, Robinson Cano, Amed Rosario, and Jeff McNeil spread across the infield and Luis Guillorme coming off the bench. J.D. Davis is expected to patrol the outfield but could get reps in the infield as well.
