Report: Phillies speaking with Red Sox about Workman
The Philadelphia Phillies appear to be looking for bullpen upgrades and have spoken with the Boston Red Sox about closer Brandon Workman, sources told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Matt Gelb.
There have been multiple players discussed by the two teams during their talks about Workman, reports Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philly.
Heath Hembree appears to be one of those players, according to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki.
Philadelphia's bullpen owns an MLB-worst 8.07 ERA.
Workman, 32, had an incredible 2019 campaign for the Red Sox. He owned a 10-1 record to go with 16 saves, a 1.88 ERA, and 13.1 strikeouts per nine innings in 71 2/3 frames.
This season has been more trying for Workman, as it's been for most of his team. He's authored a 4.05 ERA in seven appearances, though he's still striking out hitters at a high rate (10.1 K/9).
Workman is eligible for free agency at the end of the season, which could make him expendable for a Red Sox team sitting last in the American League East with an 8-18 record.
