Blue Jays trade for Dodgers' Stripling

The Toronto Blue Jays acquired Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Ross Stripling for pitching prospect Kendall Williams and a player to be named later, the team announced Monday.

The move ends a busy day for the Blue Jays, as the club traded for speedy utility man Jonathan Villar and left-hander Robbie Ray in two separate deals. Toronto also made a pair of moves leading up to the trade deadline.

Stripling, 30, owns a career 3.68 ERA across five seasons with the Dodgers. He was selected to play in the 2018 All-Star Game.

The veteran was dealt to the Los Angeles Angels during the offseason in a trade that also involved outfielder Joc Pederson, but the deal fell apart and both players returned to the Dodgers.

With Stripling gone, righty Tony Gonsolin will get a chance to start for Los Angeles.

"We made the decision going forward to put Tony in the rotation. ... Didn't feel comfortable putting (Stripling) in (the) bullpen especially as we look out toward next spring training," Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said Monday, according to Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register.

Williams' inclusion in the deal was announced by the club Tuesday. The 20-year-old was selected in the second round of the 2019 draft. He posted a 1.13 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 16 innings of Rookie ball. He was the Blue Jays' No. 13 prospect, per MLB Pipeline.
