Nationals' Rizzo lands multi-year extension

The Washington Nationals signed president of baseball operations and general manager Mike Rizzo to a multi-year contract extension, the team announced Saturday.

The deal will keep Rizzo with the defending champions for the next three years, a source told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

"We are thrilled that Mike will continue to lead our club," said team owner Mark D. Lerner. "He guided us through the early years of building this franchise into what it is today - a perennial contender that brought a World Series championship home to Washington, D.C. last season."

Rizzo's contract was set to expire at the end of the 2020 campaign. The 59-year-old executive took over as the team's interim GM in March 2009. This is the fourth extension he's signed since taking on the role.

The Nationals own a 951-867 record under Rizzo's guidance. They've won four National League East titles and a World Series over the last eight years.
