Yankees' Cashman: 'Our fans deserve better baseball than this'
This isn't the news Brian Cashman wants to spread.
The New York Yankees are in a bit of a free fall, losers of their last four games and sitting third in the AL East at 21-20. As a result, the team's general manager is having to answer for his club precariously hanging on to a postseason spot in an expanded format.
"We're on our own," Cashman said Tuesday, according to Mike Harrington of Buffalo News Sports. "There's no help coming from anywhere. The challenge is to find a way to get through this storm, batten down the hatches, and come out on the other end with clear skies and sunny days ahead. ... If you're out at sea, the Coast Guard isn't coming to save us."
The executive added the Yankees "are used to better baseball than this," and "our fans deserve better baseball than this," according to Jack Curry of YES Network.
"We have 19 (games) to go," Cashman continued, per Curry. "It's time to go."
New York is coming off of a thrashing at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays, who scored 10 runs in one inning on Monday en route to beating the Yankees 12-7. The Jays enter Tuesday with a two-game lead for second place in the division. Of the Yankees' 19 remaining games, nine are against the Blue Jays.
If the postseason began Tuesday, the Yankees would qualify for the playoffs as the eighth-seed and face first-place Tampa Bay Rays in the opening round.
