Report: Executives believe it's between Jays, Mets for Springer

The Toronto Blue Jays and New York Mets appear to be engaged in a two-team race for free-agent outfielder George Springer, executives told ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Other clubs are vying for Springer's services, but none of them appear as interested as Toronto and New York, Passan adds.

The Mets are reportedly focused on acquiring the former Houston Astros outfielder, with the organization moving closer to deciding between him or pitcher Trevor Bauer about two weeks ago. Springer is also a preference of new Mets owner Steve Cohen.

The Blue Jays, meanwhile, are hoping to add a "really good player" this offseason, according to general manager Ross Atkins. Springer is reportedly giving "serious thought" to playing for the young club full of budding stars like Bo Bichette, Cavan Biggio, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

Springer, 31, is a three-time All-Star, who produced a .270/.361/.491 slash line with 174 home runs and 458 RBIs over seven campaigns in Houston.

The 2017 World Series MVP has also been a dynamic postseason performer throughout his career, hitting 19 homers and recording 38 RBIs in 63 playoff games.
