Report: Chirinos joins Yankees on minor-league deal
The New York Yankees and free-agent catcher Robinson Chirinos agreed to a minor-league contract, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
If Chirinos makes the team, he will earn a base salary of $1-million and can make an additional $500,000 through incentives, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network. The deal also contains multiple opt-out clauses.
Chirinos is expected to compete for playing time with Gary Sanchez and Kyle Higashioka.
The veteran backstop suited up for the Texas Rangers and New York Mets last season, slashing .162/.232/.243 with one homer over 26 games.
Chirinos owns a career .755 OPS after playing for the Rangers, Mets, Houston Astros, and Tampa Bay Rays over nine major-league seasons. The 36-year-old went deep 17 times with 58 RBIs in 114 games during the 2019 campaign.
