Report: Red Sox land Danny Santana on minor-league deal

The Boston Red Sox signed utility player Danny Santana to a minor-league contract with an invite to spring training, according to Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe.

Santana will earn a base salary of $1.75 million if he's in the majors, with the chance to earn another $1 million via incentives, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. If he starts the season in Triple-A, Santana will get a $100,000 bonus. The deal also contains an opt-out clause.

The reported addition gives the Red Sox another versatile option to play in the infield or outfield to go along with newcomers Marwin Gonzalez and Enrique Hernandez.

Santana, 30, only appeared in 15 games last season after undergoing elbow surgery. He underwent the procedure in September, and the recovery timeline was projected to be seven-to-eight months.

The seven-year veteran produced a breakout campaign in 2019, hitting 28 home runs with 21 stolen bases while posting a .857 OPS over 130 games for the Texas Rangers. He's also suited up for the Minnesota Twins and Atlanta Braves.
