Toronto Blue Jays outfielder George Springer made his regular-season debut against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday.
Springer, who hadn't played in 2021 due to oblique and quad injuries, was the designated hitter and batted leadoff.
"I just had to trust myself," the three-time All-Star said when asked about the hurdle he had clear to return, according to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet. "Obviously, I don't want to hurt myself again. This wasn't fun."
Springer hurt his oblique in spring training and then strained his quad while working his way back from the first injury. The 31-year-old signed a six-year, $150-million contract during the offseason.
The Blue Jays went 11-11 in the 22 games Springer missed.
