DeGrom plans to opt out of contract after 2022 season
Jacob deGrom is planning to test free agency.
The New York Mets ace said Monday that he intends to opt out of his contract at the end of this season, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.
The star right-hander added that he won't negotiate a new deal until after the 2022 campaign but plans to be in constant communication with the Mets when he opts out.
"I'm excited about this team. I love being a Met. I think it would be really cool to be one my entire career. But the plan is to exercise that option and be in constant contact in the offseason with the Mets, and Steve Cohen, and the front office," deGrom said, according to Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News.
New York inked deGrom to a five-year, $137.5-million extension in March 2019.
DeGrom, a two-time Cy Young winner, was limited to 15 starts in 2021 due to multiple injuries. However, the 33-year-old was named an All-Star for the fourth time after posting a 1.08 ERA with a career-best 14.3 K/9. His 4.9 fWAR was the fourth-highest total in the National League among hurlers.
