Report: Phillies, Trea Turner agree to 11-year, $300M deal
The defending National League champions made a major splash in free agency.
The Philadelphia Phillies and shortstop Trea Turner agreed to an 11-year, $300-million contract, a source told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
The deal includes a full no-trade clause, according to Rosenthal.
Philadelphia will lose its second-highest and fifth-highest selections in the 2023 draft because Turner turned down the Los Angeles Dodgers' qualifying offer. The Phillies will also see their international signing bonus pool reduced by $1 million.
The two-time All-Star slashed .298/.343/.466 with 21 homers, 100 RBIs, and 27 stolen bases over 160 games during the 2022 campaign. The Dodgers will receive a compensatory draft pick for losing Turner.
The San Diego Padres were also interested in Turner, meeting with him multiple times leading up to the winter meetings and making him a $342-million offer, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.
That reported offer would've made Turner the richest shortstop in MLB history, surpassing the $341-million pact Francisco Lindor signed with the New York Mets in April 2021.
Turner returns to the NL East after spending parts of seven seasons with the Washington Nationals from 2015-21, which included a World Series title in 2019. He also reunites with former teammate Bryce Harper.
The 29-year-old joins a powerful Phillies lineup that also features Harper, J.T. Realmuto, Rhys Hoskins, Kyle Schwarber, and Nick Castellanos.
