San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado sustained a small fracture in his hand after being hit by a pitch during Monday's game against the Kansas City Royals, manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday, according to AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.
Melvin added that it's unclear whether Machado will need to go on the injured list and that the team will know more Friday.
Machado's initial X-rays came up negative after he exited the contest.
The 2022 NL MVP runner-up is off to a slow start this season, slashing .231/.282/.372 with five homers and 19 RBIs over 40 games.
San Diego owns a disappointing 20-24 record after entering the 2023 campaign as the favorite to win the NL West.
