The Los Angeles Angels placed star outfielder Mike Trout on the 10-day injured list with a fractured hamate bone in his left wrist, the club announced Tuesday.

The Angels recalled outfielder Jo Adell from Triple-A to take Trout's place on the roster.

Trout expects to return this season and said he will likely need surgery, according to The Athletic's Sam Blum.

He added that doctors told him it was a freak injury and nothing could have been done to prevent it.

The typical recovery timeline for the injury is four-to-eight weeks, according to Jeff Fletcher of SoCal News Group.

Trout suffered the injury while taking a swing in the eighth inning of Monday night's game against the San Diego Padres.

He immediately shook his left arm and proceeded to exit with manager Phil Nevin and a trainer:

Trout was slated to start the All-Star Game after earning his 11th selection. The three-time AL MVP is slashing .264/.370/.495 with 18 homers and 46 RBIs over 81 games this season.
