New York Mets infield prospect Ronny Mauricio has a torn ACL and needs surgery, the team announced Tuesday.
Mauricio will get a second opinion on the right knee injury in Florida but surgery remains the likely outcome, a source told Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.
The 22-year-old sustained the injury while running the bases during a game in the Dominican Winter League on Sunday.
Mauricio was the top-ranked prospect in the Mets' minor-league system in 2020. He sat at No. 4 in the organization to end 2023, according to MLB Pipeline.
The rookie went deep twice with seven stolen bases and a .643 OPS across 26 games for the Mets last season. He also slashed .292/.346/.506 with 23 homers and 24 steals over 116 contests in Triple-A in 2023.
