Reds land Montas on 1-year deal reportedly worth $16M
The Cincinnati Reds signed right-hander Frankie Montas to a one-year contract, the team announced Tuesday.
Montas is guaranteed $16 million, with $14 million coming via way of his 2024 salary and the remaining $2 million attached to a buyout in 2025 if his $20-million mutual option for that year is declined, reports MLB.com's Mark Sheldon.
The deal also includes performance bonuses, a source told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
Montas made one relief appearance for the New York Yankees last season after undergoing shoulder surgery in February. However, the Yankees were interested in bringing him back, reports Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
The 30-year-old finished sixth in 2021 AL Cy Young voting after posting a 3.37 ERA with 1.18 WHIP and 207 strikeouts over 187 innings (32 starts) for the Oakland Athletics. He was dealt to New York at the 2022 trade deadline.
Montas owns a career 3.90 ERA with 3.79 FIP and a 9.3 K/9 over eight years in the majors.
The Reds designated catcher Austin Wynns for assignment in a corresponding move.
