Marlins land Tim Anderson on 1-year deal reportedly worth $5M

The Miami Marlins and shortstop Tim Anderson agreed to a contract, the club announced Saturday.

It's a one-year contract worth $5 million, sources told Jesse Rogers of ESPN.

The Marlins placed 2022 NL Cy Young Sandy Alcantara on the 60-day injured list to make room for Anderson on the 40-man roster. Alcantara is expected to miss the entire 2024 campaign as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.

Anderson, who made back-to-back trips to the All-Star Game in 2021-22, spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Chicago White Sox. The 30-year-old won a Silver Slugger in 2020 and an AL batting title in 2019. He also slashed .318/.347/.473 with 51 homers and 53 stolen bases over 374 games between 2019-22.

However, the White Sox declined a $14-million option on Anderson for this season after he recorded just one homer with 25 RBIs and a .582 OPS over 123 contests during the worst campaign of his career last year.

It's the first MLB contract the Marlins handed out to a free agent this offseason.
