Cubs DFA Gomes, add Nido

The Chicago Cubs designated veteran catcher Yan Gomes for assignment, the club announced Wednesday.
Gomes is slashing .154/.179/.242 with two homers over 33 games this season. The 36-year-old is in his third year with the Cubs on a $6-million option.
The 2018 All-Star has also played for the Toronto Blue Jays, Cleveland Guardians, Washington Nationals, and Oakland Athletics over his 13-year career. He won a World Series with the Nationals in 2019.
Chicago also signed catcher Tomás Nido, who was released by the New York Mets in early June after spending eight years with the team. The 30-year-old went deep three times with a .623 OPS over 32 contests in 2024.
