The Tampa Bay Rays traded reliever Phil Maton to the New York Mets for a player to be named later or cash, the teams announced Tuesday.
Maton owns a 4.58 ERA with 1.33 WHIP and 30 strikeouts over 35 1/3 innings this season.
However, the 31-year-old posted a 3.67 ERA with 9.8 K/9 over three years with the Houston Astros from 2021-23. He's also been sensational in the postseason over his career, authoring a 0.83 ERA with 22 strikeouts over 21 2/3 innings.
New York's bullpen has the fourth-worst fWAR in the NL amid a wild-card hunt.
The team designated left-hander Joey Lucchesi for assignment to make room for Maton on the active roster.
