The St. Louis Cardinals are placing outfielder Tommy Pham on waivers, sources told The Athletic's Katie Woo.

Pham is eligible to play for the Cardinals while on waivers unless he's claimed by a team, which would likely happen before MLB's postseason eligibility deadline Sept. 1.

Any team that claims Pham would have to pay the remaining $850,000 he's owed on his one-year, $3-million contract.

Pham declined to answer questions following the Cardinals' 4-1 win over the San Diego Padres on Thursday, saying he didn't want to be a distraction, according to Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat.

Pham posted solid numbers with the Chicago White Sox but has struggled to a .206/.286/.368 line in 23 games with the Cardinals since being acquired in a three-team trade also involving the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The 36-year-old owns a .778 OPS across 11 MLB seasons.
