Kansas City Royals first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks with a broken right thumb, the club announced Friday.

Pasquantino was placed on the 10-day injured list, while infielder Nick Loftin was called up from Triple-A to take his spot on the big-league roster.

Pasquantino sustained the injury during Thursday's loss to the Houston Astros. The 26-year-old was hurt when Astros catcher Yainer Diaz clipped his hand on a play at first base. Royals reliever Lucas Erceg was also injured on the same play after he was hit by a comebacker on the right hand.

Pasquantino is third in the American League with 97 RBIs this season. He's been excellent with runners in scoring position, hitting .360 in 139 at-bats.

The Royals are in second place in the AL Central, trailing the Cleveland Guardians by 1.5 games. Kansas City holds a two-game edge over the Minnesota Twins for the second wild-card spot in the American League.
