Verdugo hopes to return to Yankees, even 'if it's not next year'

New York Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo hopes 2024 isn't his only season suiting up for the franchise.

"Maybe one day, we can come back," Verdugo said Wednesday, per SNY. "If it's not next year, maybe it's another year, but (I) would like to come back and show the type of player I really am."

Verdugo struggled at the plate in 2024 after the Yankees acquired him in a trade with the Boston Red Sox in the offseason.

The 28-year-old posted a career-worst .647 OPS with 13 home runs and 61 RBIs in 149 games this season.

Verdugo said he's thought about his impending free agency but is focused on the task at hand as the Yankees try to stage a historic comeback in the World Series.

"Just got to play it how it is," Verdugo said. "At the end of the day, I'm focused on winning a World Series, trying to win today, and then win the next. So, whatever happens, happens."
