Astros GM: 'We've had conversations internally' about Bregman

Houston Astros general manager Dana Brown confirmed Friday his team is still contemplating re-signing third baseman Alex Bregman.

"To see that he's still a free agent is pretty interesting," Brown told reporters including Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston. "The fact that he's still a free agent, we see it every day. We've had conversations internally, but that's kinda where it is right now - he's still a free agent."

Brown added: "Scott Boras and I have exchanged text messages. I'll leave it at that."

The Astros and Bregman reportedly restarted conversations this week.

Bregman's return to Houston reportedly could result in several players changing positions, including longtime second baseman Jose Altuve moving to left field and newcomer Isaac Paredes heading to the keystone position. However, Brown acknowledged the club hasn't committed to any positional moves.

"I don't want to get into hypotheticals at all, but I didn't say anything to Jose about playing left field," Brown said. "That's not something that we're talking about right now. Ultimately, Bregman's still a free agent, and I'm sure there's a few teams still talking to him. We'll see what happens."

It's believed the Astros' six-year, $156-million offer to Bregman, which he reportedly rejected in December, is still on the table.

"I think (owner Jim Crane) will go over the CBT if he has to. ... He's always shown he's dedicated to do that," Brown said. "I'm not saying we're gonna do it this year, but Jim Crane will do it if he thinks it's a good move for the club."

The Astros are reportedly trying to trade reliever Ryan Pressly, who's owed $14 million in 2025, to create financial flexibility.
